Solar Generator vs Gas Generator for Hurricane Backup
Battery + solar or gas? An honest comparison on runtime, safety, noise, fuel, and cost, so you pick the right backup for your home before the next storm.
A solar generator is a battery power station with compatible panels. A fuel generator makes electricity while its engine runs. The right backup depends on your measured loads, outage duration, charging or fuel access and safe operating space.
Battery backup: no combustion exhaust, with operating limits
Battery stations do not produce engine carbon monoxide, but still need the exact model’s operating conditions: a dry location, ventilation, clear vents, specified temperature range and separation from heat or flammable material. A closed closet is not a general safe operating recommendation. Cooling fans may be audible; these devices are not necessarily silent.
Read the Delta 2 manual or your station’s own instructions. Pass-through charging is not a promise of uninterrupted power. Delta 2’s EPS transfer is within 30ms, not a zero-millisecond UPS, and EcoFlow requires compatibility testing for sensitive devices.
For home CPAP, use the approved adapter and follow the medical device’s instructions and care-team backup plan. Check humidifier settings and test the exact setup. EcoFlow excludes emergency life-sustaining equipment from Delta 2 use; a general station must not be presented as a guaranteed medical backup.
Fuel generators: keep carbon monoxide outside
CPSC instructs users to operate portable generators outdoors, at least 20 feet from the house, with exhaust directed away from occupied buildings. Never run one in a home, garage, basement or shed, even with doors or windows open. Use working carbon-monoxide alarms and follow the manual’s weather protection, electrical and refueling instructions.
Use correctly rated cords for direct appliance connections. Household circuit backup needs an approved transfer system installed by a qualified professional. Never plug generator output into a wall outlet or backfeed the grid.
Size duration separately from output
A 2,000Wh battery does not guarantee several days of essentials. Estimate capacity × conversion efficiency ÷ combined average watts, and separately check continuous output, surge and 120V/240V compatibility. At an illustrative 150W combined average and 85% efficiency, 2,000Wh provides about 11.3 hours. Extra batteries add energy; higher output alone does not add hours.
Solar can extend battery operation only when actual harvest, after losses, covers consumption. Fuel generators can run longer with safe refueling, maintenance and fuel access, but those requirements can become difficult after a storm. EcoFlow’s runtime test method explains how to measure a real load before an emergency.
Compare power stations and solar bundles, then test your planned loads before an outage. The fridge sizing guide explains the energy calculation and USDA temperature-based food-safety guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size power station runs a refrigerator during an outage?+
Match the exact fridge startup surge and running watts to the station output, then size energy for the required hours. At an illustrative 150W average and 85% efficiency, 1,000Wh estimates 5.7 hours. Test the actual pairing, check low-load timeout settings and use an appliance thermometer; capacity alone cannot guarantee overnight runtime or food safety.
How do I calculate runtime for my devices?+
Estimate hours as capacity in watt-hours × conversion efficiency ÷ measured combined average watts. At 85% assumed efficiency, 1,000Wh at 100W average gives 8.5 hours. Average draw already includes duty cycling; do not count it twice. Separately check combined running watts, startup surge and voltage.
Can portable power stations be recharged with solar?+
Most modern stations accept solar input and recharge off-grid with compatible panels, while also charging from a wall outlet or a car 12V port. Check the model's maximum solar input in watts to size your panels.
