What Size Power Station Do You Need to Run a Refrigerator?
The most common power-station question, answered with real numbers. How to estimate your fridge’s draw, why surge watts matter, and how many hours each capacity tier actually buys you.
A refrigerator backup needs two separate checks: the station must start the compressor, and its battery must hold enough energy for the hours you need. Capacity alone cannot establish either food safety or a promised overnight runtime.
Check output and startup first
Read the exact refrigerator and power-station manuals. Measure running watts and check startup surge against the station’s continuous output, surge limit and surge duration. An inverter’s boosted-watt mode is not necessarily suitable for a compressor. Test the actual pairing before an outage.
Calculate energy without counting cycling twice
Estimated AC runtime in hours = battery capacity in Wh × conversion efficiency ÷ measured average watts. EcoFlow’s US testing guide suggests 80–90% as an initial AC conversion assumption, followed by testing the real load. Average draw already includes compressor on/off cycling, so do not apply another duty-cycle multiplier.
For an illustrative refrigerator using 1.5kWh per day, average draw is 62.5W. With an assumed 85% efficiency, fridge-only estimates are:
| Battery capacity | Estimated runtime at 62.5W average / 85% efficiency |
|---|---|
| 500Wh | 6.8 hours |
| 1,000Wh | 13.6 hours |
| 2,000Wh | 27.2 hours |
| 3,000Wh | 40.8 hours |
These are arithmetic examples, not bench tests. Our cross-vertical comparison deliberately uses a heavier 150W average; at that load the same battery runs much less time. Measure watt-hours over a representative day, including defrost cycles, and leave reserve for inverter overhead, battery condition, heat and other devices.
Protect food with temperature measurements
Use an appliance thermometer and keep the refrigerator at or below 40°F. Keep its door closed. USDA’s outage guidance says an unopened refrigerator keeps food cold about four hours without power. USDA advises discarding perishables held above 40°F for more than two hours.
Do not rely on a fixed schedule such as running the compressor for twenty minutes every few hours. That schedule cannot establish safe food temperatures or a runtime multiplier. Never taste food to decide whether it is safe; follow USDA instructions for the particular food and outage conditions.
Check timeout settings and other loads
Intermittent fridge loads can trigger a station’s low-load shutdown. The Delta 2 manual directs owners to set its AC timeout to never for critical refrigerator use and regularly check battery level. Follow the instructions for your exact model.
Add measured energy for phones, lights, fans and other loads before choosing capacity. For home CPAP, follow both device and station manuals, approved adapter instructions and your care-team backup plan; humidifier and heated-tube settings can change demand substantially. General portable stations are not a substitute for an approved emergency life-sustaining power system.
Compatible solar panels may extend runtime. Compare actual daily harvested watt-hours with consumption and charging losses; panel nameplate watts and a sunny forecast do not guarantee continuous multi-day operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size power station runs a refrigerator during an outage?+
Match the exact fridge startup surge and running watts to the station output, then size energy for the required hours. At an illustrative 150W average and 85% efficiency, 1,000Wh estimates 5.7 hours. Test the actual pairing, check low-load timeout settings and use an appliance thermometer; capacity alone cannot guarantee overnight runtime or food safety.
How do I calculate runtime for my devices?+
Estimate hours as capacity in watt-hours × conversion efficiency ÷ measured combined average watts. At 85% assumed efficiency, 1,000Wh at 100W average gives 8.5 hours. Average draw already includes duty cycling; do not count it twice. Separately check combined running watts, startup surge and voltage.
Can portable power stations be recharged with solar?+
Most modern stations accept solar input and recharge off-grid with compatible panels, while also charging from a wall outlet or a car 12V port. Check the model's maximum solar input in watts to size your panels.
