Espresso Machine Maintenance: What Actually Kills Machines
Scale kills more home espresso machines than anything else, and it builds invisibly. What descaling, backflushing and filtration each do, and how often they are worth doing.
Home espresso machines rarely fail dramatically. They get slower, cooler and weaker until something gives, and the cause is usually one of two things: mineral scale in the water path, or rancid coffee oil in the group. Both are preventable, and the two jobs that prevent them are different jobs people routinely confuse.
Descaling and backflushing are not the same thing
Descaling removes mineral deposits from the water path — boiler, thermoblock, pipes. Acidic solution, and it addresses the water side.
Backflushing removes coffee oils and fines from the group head and three-way valve, using a blind basket and often a detergent. It addresses the coffee side.
Doing one does nothing for the other. A machine backflushed weekly but never descaled still scales up; a descaled machine with a filthy group still makes rancid-tasting shots.
Scale is the one that ends machines
Hard water deposits calcium carbonate on every hot surface it touches. Inside a boiler or thermoblock that means slower heat-up, a lower and less stable brew temperature, reduced flow as passages narrow, and eventually a blockage or a failed element.
None of it is visible from outside, which is why it is the failure nobody sees coming. Machines with a thermoblock or thermojet are especially exposed, because those water passages are narrow to begin with — the compact machines many people buy first, like the Breville Bambino, are exactly where scale bites soonest.
Filter the water. An in-tank filter or filtered water from a jug cuts the mineral load at source and is far easier than descaling repeatedly. Breville's ClaroSwiss filter is the in-tank type. Most super-automatics take one and also let you set the water hardness, so the descale prompt arrives on a schedule matched to your supply rather than a generic one.
Do not swing to distilled or zero-mineral water either. Espresso needs some mineral content to extract properly, and many machines sense water level by conductivity — pure water can confuse them.
What backflushing does, and which machines can do it
Backflushing forces water back through the group and out through the three-way valve, clearing oils from places a brush cannot reach. It needs a blind basket, which many machines include.
Only machines with a three-way solenoid valve can backflush properly. Plenty of entry-level machines have none, and for those the equivalent is removing and cleaning the shower screen and dispersion block regularly. Check the manual before buying detergent — running a detergent backflush on a machine not designed for it can push residue somewhere it should not go.
On super-automatics the equivalent is the brew group: models with a removable one you rinse under the tap are markedly easier to keep clean than sealed systems relying on tablets. That trade-off is covered on the super-automatic machines page.
A realistic schedule
Frequency depends on water hardness and how much you brew, so treat these as starting points:
- Every shot — purge and wipe the steam wand. Milk proteins bake on within seconds.
- Daily-ish — knock the puck out, rinse portafilter and basket, run a blank shot to clear the screen.
- Weekly-ish — water backflush if supported, clean the shower screen, wash the drip tray properly.
- Monthly-ish — detergent backflush if applicable; soak portafilter and baskets in a coffee-oil cleaner, then rinse very thoroughly.
- Every few months — descale, or whenever the machine asks. Machines that know your water hardness ask at roughly the right time.
The steam wand one is worth singling out: it is the most-skipped and the most immediately noticeable. A wand purged and wiped every time stays clear; one that isn't ends up partly blocked and will not texture milk properly.
Grinders need maintenance too
Coffee oils build up on burrs and in the chute, go rancid, and taint everything after. Brush the chamber out periodically and, where the design allows, remove and clean the burrs. Cleaning tablets are an easier middle path for grinders that are awkward to strip.
Burrs are also consumables. They dull over thousands of shots, which shows up as a grind that will not go fine enough any more. Better grinders publish a burr lifespan and sell replacements, which is a quiet argument for buying something serviceable — see coffee grinders.
What this buys you
A machine descaled on schedule, backflushed where it can be, and run on filtered water will outlast a neglected one by years, and more immediately it keeps tasting the way it did when it was new. Most "my machine has got worse" complaints are maintenance rather than the machine.

Frequently Asked Questions
Semi-automatic or super-automatic — which should I buy?+
A semi-automatic gives you the portafilter, the grinder choice, and control over dose and timing, which is what you want if the process is part of the appeal. A super-automatic grinds, tamps, brews, and froths behind a closed door for one button press, which is what you want if the drink is the point. The machines cost about the same at the middle of the market; they differ in how much of the work you do.
Do I need a separate grinder?+
For a semi-automatic, yes — an espresso grinder matters more than the machine, because espresso needs fine, evenly adjustable grind that a general-purpose blade or coarse burr grinder cannot deliver. Super-automatics and a few "all-in-one" semi-autos have a grinder built in, so no separate purchase is needed.
Is 15 bar of pump pressure better than 9?+
No. Espresso is extracted at about 9 bar at the puck; 15 bar is the pump's maximum rating, not the brew pressure, and nearly every consumer machine on the market is rated the same 15 bar. It is not a spec that separates machines, which is why we do not score it as a winner in comparisons.
